Vitamin D:

Vitamin D controls the process by which the information contained within a gene becomes a useful product (known as gene expression). The expression of more than 1,000 genes in the body are controlled by Vitamin D, particularly in the immune system, endothelial cells which line the blood vessels, pancreatic beta cells, and brain neurons. These genes prevent influenza, treat tuberculosis, prevent common cancers, strengthen muscles and prevent autoimmune diseases.  The immune system-mediated inflammatory response that generates atherosclerosis and congestive heart failure, is known to be dulled by the Vitamin D expressed genes. 7

In fact one of the essential roles Vitamin D plays in the body is calcium metabolism and absorption.
