Vitamin B12 methylcobalamin

Vitamin B12, together with folate, helps with the synthesis of DNA and red blood cells. It is also involved in the production of the myelin sheath around the nerves, and the conduction of nerve impulses.

During the aging process, Vitamin B12 is known to be lacking, with the percentage of the population having suboptimal serum concentrations (less than 200pg/mL or 148pM) increasing from 23% in the 19-64yr age group to 62% above 65yrs of age.  Anemia (macrocytic), peripheral neuropathy, and cognitive impairment can result from a lack of Vitamin B12 .
