Polypodium Leucotomos
Polypodium Leucotomos is a fern from Central America known as ‘Fernblock’ or ‘Heliocare’ and is a supplement for sensitive skin. Most of the studies on Polypodium Leucotomos indicate a variety of protective effects against UV(B) induced skin cell radiation, protecting against the sun despite absorbing the radiation; in the same way sunscreen prevents radiation from being absorbed by omitting the radiation.
The benefits are part anti-oxidant and part anti-inflammatory, but may be due to the induction of p53, a protein that is sometimes known as being anti-tumor but also suppresses inflammation whilst protecting the genome (DNA) from damage.
The novel essence of Polypodium is that is it is effective after oral ingestion and that DNA protection has been found in rats following oral ingestion.
Research on humans indicate that polypodium benefits most skin conditions with fairly reliable suppression of erythema (reddening of the skin in response to UV radiation), as well as hypersensitivity to sunlight and ‘polymorphic light eruptions’ (a delayed onset of itchiness and reddening not necessarily related to sunburn).
