Alpha-GPC (Alpha-glycerophosphocholine) is a supplement containing choline, that has been proven to boost attention, mental focus and cognitive performance. Although choline can be found in a variety of food products in our diet, it is far more potent in higher doses.
Alpha-GPC is being studied as an oral supplementation for nootropic (mental enhancer) purposes, especially for its cognitive-enhancing capability and its capacity to slow the rate of cognitive decline in the elderly. High doses (1,200mg) of Alpha-GPC, together with the standard therapy of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, have shown to be effective in reducing cognitive decline in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease.
Dwindling levels of GABA in the brain cells of elderly patients may be partly responsible for early cognitive deterioration resulting in dementia, mood disorders and confusion as seen in degenerative brain conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. Alpha-GPC stimulates the release of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), making it more available to brain cells, and triggers the synthesis of new acetylcholine – a neurotransmitter involved in memory and cognitive function.
